Assign individual responsibility
Only hire people whose competence you can trust, and then assign them individual responsibility. Let them own a corner of the product: if they do great, they will be rewarded, if they fail, they are held accountable.
Competent people thrive on ownership.
If you have to micromanage people, that means you don't trust them. If you can't trust them, why did you hire them?
Don't diffuse responsibility.
Diffusing responsibility can happen in two ways:
- Assigning responsibility to "the team".
- Not clearly explaining the minimum expected results.
Make it clear to each individual what they are responsible for, and what the minimum expectations are.
